General Santos International Airport information
General Santos International Airport is the largest airport in Mindanao island and serves the region known as SOCSARGEN (South Cotabato, Sarangani province and General Santos). Although it is called International Airport the airport has not seen an international flight for decades.
The airport was inaugurated on July 6th, 1996, replacing the old and smaller Buayan Airport (now named Rajah Buayan Air Station used by the Philippine Air Force). This new, larger and modern airport uses the old airport IATA code, GES. With well over a million passengers a year GenSan Airport can offer some decent facilities including cafe's, ATM and taxi service.
The runway of General Santos Airport is the third longest runway in the Philippines (3.227 m) after Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Mactan-Cebu International Airport. The airport can handle Airbus A380 aircraft as well but so far only a few flights a day depart here using smaller Airbus A319 aircraft.
Currently the only airlines offering flights on GenSan Airport are Cebu Pacific (Cebu, Iloilo and Manila) and PAL Express (Manila and Iloilo).
