Bandung, an introduction

Bandung

Bandung is the capital of West Java and one of big metropolitan cities in the province. Bandung is known as Paris Van Java for the mild atmosphere. It’s also known as the City of Flower for there are many kinds of flower you can find in Bandung. Many universities available here, making Bandung as one of education cities to go to. One of them is ITB, the first university which provides technique major in Indonesia. Bandung was also the host of Asia Africa Conference in 1955. Nowadays, Bandung is known well as the city of fashion for there are many malls and factory outlet spread.


Bandung History

Bandung came from the word Bendung or Bendungan. It’s because of Citarum River dam by Mount Tangkuban Perahu lava forming a lake. Another opinion says that Bandung was taken from a water vehicle (2 boats tied into 1) used by Regent R.A. Wiranatakusumah II to cross Citarum River looking for new capital (the previous capital was Dayeuhkolot).

Things to see

There are many things you can see here in the city, one of them is Asia-Africa Street where the Asia-Africa Conference was held in 1955. Gedung Sate, Savoy Homann Hotel, Gedung Sri Darma and Gedung Kantor Pos Besar are some historical buildings with Dutch architecture you can find here in the city. There are still many other buildings you can visit here like Bandug Lautan Api Monument, Geologi Bandung Museum, Bandung Zoo, Lembang, Cihampelas and Cibaduyut shopping center.

Bandung is one of big metropolitan cities in the province, making you easy to choose what to do for there are many things you can try. Bandung is known well as the city of fashion. As the city of fashion, there are many shopping centre you can go to like Cihampelas and Cibaduyut. Other shopping centre you can go to are Braga City Walk, Bandung Electronic Mall, Cimahi Mall, Planet Dago, etc.

Bandung is a paradise for those who want to taste simple culinary. There are various culinary such as Siomay, Batagor, Lomie, Cendol Elizabeth, Cimol, Cireng, Cilok, Cireng Isi and Oncom. The icon is Peuyeum. You can also bring peuyeum back home for your family. Peuyeum will only last for 3 days to a week for Peuyeum is made by fermentation.

Airport at Bandung

Bandung is served by the Husein Sastranegara Airport.

Husein Sastranegara International Airport (BDO) is located near Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. The airport is named after an Indonesian hero from West Java. The airport has one large terminal used for both domestic and international flights; Terminal 2 is being developed. The airport has many facilities like two executive lounges, internet access and TV, praying rooms, restaurants, shops and ATM. The Governor of West Java announced that there will be new airport built to replace Husein Sastranegara International Airport, named Bandung Majalengka International Airport. It would be located in Kertajati, Majalengka Regency, some 100 kilometers east of Bandung.

Bandung is an hub for AirAsia and connects Bandung with Kuala Lumpur, Medan, Denpasar and Singapore amongst others.

Entering the city from the airport

The airport is located at the end of Pajajaran street, 5 km north-west from the city center and 3 km from the main train station. Taxi and public transport are widely available. It costs about Rp 50,000 to get there by taxi from the city centre. There are several route of public transport (called Angkot) pass the airport (you can ride it at Jl. Pajajaran). Also, most hotels in Bandung provide a free airport transfer service.
