Gorontalo, an introduction

Gorontalo

Gorontalo city is the capital of Gorontalo Province. Gorontalo is located on the northern side of Sulawesi Island, exactly on the western of Sulawesi Utara. This province is situated between 2 water areas, Tomini Bay located on the south and Sulawesi Sea on the north. You won’t be regretful if you come to Gorontalo for there are many interesting places offered by Gorontalo.


Gorontalo History

Gorontalo area, one of the oldest cities in Sulawesi was settled 400 years ago. At that time, Gorontalo was the centre of education, trading and government for the strategic location between Tomini Bay and Sulawesi Sea. Befor Gorontalo was occupied by colonizer, there were some kingdoms united in in one family bond and ruled by Gorontalo’ costumary law. The unity was called as Pohala’a. The name “Gorontalo” itself hasn’t been known where it came from. But there’s a word still usually used in Gorontalo daily language, “hulondalo”. It’s believed that Dutch was having difficulties saying that word and the word was misspelled as “horontalo”. And it became “gorontalo” if it’s written.

Things to see

If you come to Gorontalo, don’t forget to visit 65 metres high Menara Keagungan Limboto and consisted of 5 floors. From the top of this building, you can see beautiful scenery surrounding Gorontalo City. If you want something different, you can come to Rumah Adat Bandayo Pomboide (Bandayo Pomboide custom house) located in the front of Gorontalo Mayor’s office. This building is usually used to hold traditional show and sendratari (dance-drama). One thing you must see is Fort Orange located in Kwandang sub-district, 61 km away from Gorontalo City. This fort is an inheritance of Portuguese from the 17th century.

One main destination in Gorontalo is Pentadio Resort. This place is an international tourism spot and completed with various facilities where you can swim, sauna bath, fish and many more. Not far from this place, there’s Lake Limboto. You can enjoy fishing, swimming or just going around using boat. You can also enjoy the warmth of Lombongo HotWater Bathing Place which will surely make you relaxed.

Things to eat

One typical food of Gorontalo is Binthe Biluhita, usually known as Muli Siram. This food is a kind of soup consisted of sweet corn, skipjack fish, grated coconut, basil leaves and lime. There’s also Ayam Iloni is made of chicken cooked with typical spice of Gorontalo and coconut milk then roasted resulting such a delicious aroma.

Airport at Gorontalo

Gorontalo is served by the Jalaluddin Airport.

Jalaluddin Airport (GTO) is an airport near Gorontalo. It has flights to Makassar (Lion Air, Sriwijaya Air), Surabaya (Lion Air), Jakarta (Lion Air, Sriwijaya Air) and to Manado (Wings Air).

Entering the city from the airport

The Jalaluddin airport is 32km north of Gorontalo. For Rp 60,000 a share car can be booked at the taxi desk inside the terminal, and you will be taken to your requested address. To get to the airport, book the same service through the airline, travel agency or your hotel.
