The World's Shortest Airport: Juancho E. Yrausquin

The World's Shortest Airport: Juancho E. Yrausquin

Why is it called the world's shortest airport? This is because the Juancho E. Yrausquin airport has runways only 400 meters long. The airport also is the only airport on the island of Saba in the Caribbean located in Netherlands.

In addition, the location of this airport is quite terrible because on one side it’s directly adjacent to the mountains and on both ends of the runway is facing directly into the sea. Although the location is terrible and by aviation experts called one of the most dangerous airports in the world, but until now there has never been a plane crash at the airport Juancho E. Yrausquin.

Because of its short runway, the Juancho E. Yrausquin airport cannot accommodate jet aircraft types. Only small aircraft such as Twin Otter or helicopter can be landed at this airport. The most frequent plane landed at this airport is a Twin Otter aircraft and BN-2 Islander.

On the southwest side of the runway there is a ramp that has a helipad and airport terminal building where there are the Winair office, immigration, security and firefighter offices also. Aircraft refueling points do not exist here. Even so, airport Juancho E. Yrausquin has only one airline that serves this airport, which is Winair.

Winair serves daily flights on the route to Saint Maarten and Saint Eustatius using aircraft DHC-6 Twin Otter. Flights from Airport Juancho E. Yrausquin to Saint Maarten airport takes only about twelve minutes long.
