Boracay: Best beach in the world
Planning a beach holiday but tired of Bali, again...? Why not go to Boracay Island in the Philippines. A beautiful retreat and voted the best beach in the world in 1990 and 1996.
Boracay was a hidden secret till the 1970's when tourism slowly began to develop. Its beautiful beaches made it soon a popular destination. Especially the last decade development and building activities have increased dramatically and Boracay has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines.
The island is not pristine anymore, but the beach is still beautiful and is looked after intensively by the local government. Smoking on the beach front and littering is not allowed and will be fined with a hefty fee. This makes the beach surprisingly clean and although it is pretty developed now, it is still one of the best beaches in the world.
Although there are still hidden and quiet places on the island, most visitors don't come to Boracay to sit on a beach alone. Boracay offers many attractive things to do, like scuba diving, hiking, climbing, windsurfing, kite boarding, snorkeling and even gokarts. On the beach front are many fine and affordable restaurants and almost every nationality is represented: for example, you can eat Japanese, Korean, German, Danish, Swiss, Indonesian and Chinese food. On the beach front and on the main road are a couple of good bars and clubs, so more often than you planned, you will chill the next day on the beach with another hangover...
How to get there?
Best and fastest way to get there is to fly of course and from Indonesia this means a transfer in Manila. There are multiple airlines flying to Manila from Jakarta: Cebu Pacific has a direct flight, and JetStar can get you there with a stopover in Singapore. From other cities in Indonesia it is best to transfer in Singapore
There are two airports in the vicinity of Boracay island: Caticlan airport and Kalibo airport on the bigger island of Panay. Both airports have regular flights from Manila. The Caticlan airport is only few kilometers from the harbour for the boat to Boracay. Kalibo is a two hour drive away from the harbour, but since this is a bigger airport, flights can be much cheaper. In front of Kalibo airport are minivans waiting to get you to the Caticlan harbor (PHP 200).
Boracay is just a few kilometers from the main island and the boat ride takes just 15 minutes.
