How To Use Trains in Japan

In Japan the train is a very popular way of public transportation. But if you want to use Japanese trains, you can't just go in, there are several things you need to know first.

Choose the type of trains

Japan has several types of trains such as The Shinkansen, JR, Rapid and others. So, first, you have to decide what type of train you will use because each train departs from a different station. It is therefore important to know where you want to go exactly.

Find info about railway lines

After determining the type of train you will use, you should find information about the railway line. You can find the map in the station. Don't worry, there are plenty of maps in English. You need to know from what station you are starting, and the name of station you are going to. Then, all you do is just connect the line color between these places.

Buy your ticket

You can buy your ticket at a vending machines or at the ticket counter in the train station. There is an English language option to help you at the vending machines. It's easy to use it. First, insert the money into vending machine and choose the number of passengers. The default is one. So, if you're travelling alone, you can skip this step. Then, please press the button that shows the amount for your ticket. Then, you can pick up your ticket.

You also can buy your ticket with IC Card. IC Cards are rechargeable cards that can be used to conveniently pay fares on public transport. You can buy an IC Card at any major train station in Japan.

Go to the platform

Once you have bought your ticket, you should go to the platform where your train is located. There are sign and arrows that will guide you to your destination.

Ride the train

Be sure to keep your e-ticket, when riding the train. In Japan, it's proper not to talk on the phone when you are in the train, whether it's crowded or not. But, if someone calls you while you are on the train, it's still acceptable to answer the phone and simply say “Sorry, i'm on the train. Can i call you back later?” and hang up. So you don't have to ignore the call.
